だけ

付加

⭐ 車を買ったといっても、中古だ。
✅ 車を買ったといっても、中古だけだ。

Both of these are correct, but the corrected sentence includes a more intended nuance

❌ 女性はその自分だけの体ばかりではなく、子供を妊娠するうえでも大切なものだと思います。
✅ 女性の体は、その人にとってばかりではなく、子供を妊娠するうえでも大切なものだと思います。

「だけ」is not necessary here.

だけ→(ちょうど)になる

⭐ 日本は戦争をしてから四十年の時間だけある。
✅ 日本は戦争をしてから、(ちょうど)四十年になる

Many learners use 「だけ」in place of 「ちょうど~」because they translate “just” as 「だけ」without realizing the difference in meaning.

だけ→ばかり

この大通りには主要な会社の建物があって、モダンな建物だけあります。
この大通りには主要な会社の建物があって、モダンな建物ばかりあります。

Using 「〇〇だけある」means the same as「〇〇以外はない」.
だけ=限定
ばかり=多い
This meaning「ほんとどすべてがモダンな建物だ」is better represented by using 「ばかり」.

だけ→しか

❌ それで、私はふるさとの記憶が少しだけありません。
✅ それで、私はふるさとの記憶が少ししかありません。

「だけ」cannot be used with a negative verb. While keeping the same meaning (slightly different nuance in some cases), 「しか」is used with a negative verb to mean “only.”

All of these examples in this section aren’t grammatically incorrect but are still mistakes nonetheless. All of them want to use the meaning of 「わずかに~」「期待に満たない」「残念ながら」、so 「しか+否定」must be used. These mistakes generally happen when learners aren’t used to using the negative verb to mean something that’s not negative. In Japanese, it’s normal and correct for “double negative” constructions to add emphasis, but doing such in English is grammatically incorrect. Learners must get comfortable with this idea to correctly use both 「だけ」and「しか」.

When Japanese learners want to to evaluate something using the negative form, then 「でしかない」 is not only preferable but also necessary. It seems that when learners aren’t sure to use 「でしかない」then they use 「だけだ」by mistake instead.

だけ→なら

A:読めますか?
❌ B:そのくらいのお酒だけ、大丈夫でしょう。
✅ B:そのくらいのお酒なら、大丈夫でしょう。

A:できますか。
❌ B:このぐらいだけできる。
✅ B:このぐらいならできる。

Using 「なら」for a hypothetical supposition is a much better choice. You can read more about 「なら」here.

だけ→ただの/単なる

❌ カレッジというのは修道院のような下宿屋だけとして始まったものだ。
✅ カレッジというのは修道院のような、ただの/単なる下宿屋として始まったものだ。

The best explanation I can use in English is that 「だけ」means only (like only one) and ただの/単なる means merely/only/just (I’m merely a guy who works here, that’s all). 「だけ」used in the example above is just incorrect and sounds strange.

だけ→さえ

⭐ 規則がなくても人を思いやる心だけあれば、世の中はもっと美しく、住みよい会社になると思います。
✅ 規則がなくても人を思いやる心さえあれば、世の中はもっと美しく、住みよい会社になると思います。

This isn’t grammatically incorrect in terms of meaning, but it sounds a little strange. The grammar pattern 「~さえ~ば」sounds much more natural.

位置

❌ お金だけ持っている人が出世しているとは言えない。
✅ お金を持っている人だけが出世しているとは言えない。

If you break down the phrase to just 「お金を持っている人」and you want to express “only people with money,” then 「だけ」needs to be attached to the end of the phrase.

❌ それで、子供ではだけなく大人もクリスマスを待っています。
✅ それで、子供だけではなく大人もクリスマスを待っています。

This error results from trying to combine 「子供ではない」and 「だけ」.

❌ 日本語がよく分からないので、書棚には7冊の本がありますだけ
✅ 日本語がよく分からないので、書棚には7冊の本があるだけです。

「だけ」can’t be placed after the「ます」form of verbs.

❌ でも、これは私の考えだけです。
✅ でも、これは私だけの考えです。

In this example, the emphasis isn’t really about 「私の考え」but 「私」. “It is only my thinking.” Translating directly like this may be the reason for the error. It may be due to the gerund properties of “thinking.” Furthermore, some native speakers may even mistakenly translate the above Japanese to “It is only me thinking,” which is grammatically incorrect in English. In Japanese, it’s better to think that the idea only because to you, therefore it is 「私だけの」.

さえ→だけが

❌ あなたさえ私の心の頼りだ。
✅ あなただけが私の心の頼りだ。

「あなたさえ」is another way of saying 「あなたまでも」which is a very rude way of saying it. 「さえ」is often learned to just add some emphasis, but be careful of making this mistake.

ばかり→だけ

❌ 有名な大学を出てばかりで、必ずしも出世しない。
✅ 有名な大学を出ただけでは、必ずしも出世しない。

「ばかり」has a completely different meaning than 「でか」here. 「大学を出ばかり」has the meaning of 「大学を出た直後」.

Points to Note

Be careful of mixing positive and negative verbs with 「だけ」and「しか」

Be careful of where you put 「だけ」in phrases such as 「お金を持っている人だけ」and「お金だけ持っている人」and be sure to double-check.

Be careful of mixing 「だけ」with similar grammar such as 「ちょうど」「ばかり」「さえ」でしかない」「ただの」etc.

When wanting to say things like 「学生なのは彼だけだ」novice Japanese learners will often write 「彼は学生だけだ」. It’s important to practice the 強調構文「~のは~だけだ」sentence construction
